John is a native of Middlefield, Connecticut and a graduate of the University of Connecticut. John's father, Dick Bierkan, has been a Head PGA Professional in Connecticut for 39 years.
John, like his father, developed a love for the game at an early age. As a kid, John would spend countless hours at the club with his father. During this time, John observed and learned the business of being a club professional. He also spent a lot of time working on his own game. In middle school, John got more serious about playing and starting competing in junior events. John continued playing in both high school and college.
As a member of the UCONN golf team, John competed in two NCAA Eastern Division Golf Championships. In 1999, John was ranked among the Top 10 golfers in the NCAA Division I - District I. John has also played in three CT State Open Championships, and made it to the third round of match play in the Connecticut State Amateur Championship in 2000, a title his Uncle, Don Bierkan won in 1972. John has recorded 4 hole-in-ones.
In addition to his father, John has been fortunate to work with some of the top PGA Club Professionals and well respected teaching Professionals in America.
